Tattoo Aftercare Instructions (Non-Saniderm)

Proper tattoo aftercare is essential for healing, color retention, and ensuring your tattoo looks vibrant for years to come. While each artist and tattoo may have specific instructions, here are some general guidelines that promote healing:

Step-by-Step Tattoo Aftercare

  • Remove your bandage 3-4 hours after your session using clean, washed hands.

  • Re-bandage the tattoo for the first 24 hours before sleeping or wearing clothing that may come in contact with the tattoo.

  • After the first day, avoid re-bandaging unless absolutely necessary.

  • Wash your tattoo gently 2-4 times per day using a non-scented soap, then pat dry with a clean towel.

  • Apply no lotion or ointment until your tattoo begins drying out, typically within a few days. Once it starts to dry, use an unscented lotion or ointment to keep your skin moisturized and prevent dryness.

  • Avoid submerging the tattoo in water (such as in a bath or pool) until fully healed.

  • Use a thin layer of ointment—overuse can suffocate the skin and delay healing.

  • Do not scratch or pick at the tattoo, as this can remove the top layer of skin, leading to color loss.

  • Wear sunscreen on your tattoo to protect it from sun damage and fading over time.

What to Expect During the Healing Process

  • First 1-2 Days: It’s normal for plasma to seep from the tattoo after removing the bandage. Gently wash away any excess blood or plasma. Bandaging while sleeping on the first night will protect the tattoo and your sheets.

  • Days 2-4: Wear loose clothing and avoid prolonged contact between your tattoo and fabric.

  • When the Tattoo Feels Tight: Once the area feels tight and dry, start applying lotion or ointment. Make sure it's fragrance-free.

  • Flaking: The top layer of skin will typically flake off within 1-2 weeks, which is a natural part of the healing process.

  • Long-Term Care: Your tattooed skin may remain slightly dry for the first few months. Continue moisturizing regularly, and remember: NO SCRATCHING!

By following these tattoo aftercare instructions, you can ensure that your tattoo heals properly and stays as vibrant as possible. Always listen to your artist’s advice, as their instructions may vary depending on the type of tattoo you received.
